I am prompted to write this article, “Concept of Happiness: A Buddhist Perspective” on account of this week’s global conference on, “The Gross National Happiness (GNH)” in Nova Scotia - indeed, an exceedingly refreshing idea! I understand that the purpose of this conference is to seek out ways conducive to human happiness that ensure both the material and spiritual welfare of the global citizenry. Advocates of GNH believe that instead of Gross National Product (GNP), which measures the strength of material production of a country ergo, material wellbeing, individuals in a society must find a way to assess a given society’s standard of living; GNH formula being the answer.

Worthier writers than I, eminent scholars and researchers throughout history have written numerous books and learned articles and presented erudite treatises on the subject of Buddha and His Dhamma (teachings) from a variety of diverse perspectives. In this article which I undertook to write with immense delight at the behest of the Indian Buddhist Society in Toronto my intention is to share with you, the country men and women of the Great Prince Siddhattha Gotama who became Buddha, a few of my own perspectives on the subject in the light of what I had studied over the years taking but a glimpse at the rich and inexhaustible resource of the early Buddhist Sutta literature.

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen!
First of all I would like to extend my personal blessings and greetings to all of you. Thank you for organizing this interfaith conference on a timely topic, “Global Economic Meltdown: Secular Religious Response.”
May be, that some of you are thinking, since as a Buddhist monk who has chosen to live a homeless life of poverty and celibacy, that I am immune to the impact of the current crisis and the credit crunch that is spreading like some infectious decease! Don’t be so sure my friends! – These days, when we happen to see the food that some devotees in their religious fervor and generosity put in our begging bowls, with no frills and trimmings as before, but with a lot of ‘trimming’ we know for sure, there is a crises and a crunch in the making in the community! Although it does not affect our serenity our hearts go out to the parishioner in sympathy, the man or the woman, who had lost his/her job due to lay-offs, closures and bankruptcies the present crisis had triggered and is hard pressed to make ends meet. |
